DOT Physical Exam

Did you know that specific trained and certified chiropractors can perform DOT physical examinations in South Dakota? Many drivers who carry a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) must receive a physical examination from a provider. The certification length varies depending upon the driver’s medical history, medications, and physical condition. The maximum certification is a two-year certification stating the driver’s meets all of the qualifications set forth by the FMCSA. The other most common certification is a yearly certification which usually means the driver has some type of medical condition or medication that needs closer monitoring.

To reach the maximum two-year certification, the driver must have a blood pressure equal to or under 139/89, at least 20/40 vision, adequate hearing at a distance of 5 feet in one ear, and no other medical conditions that may disrupt or impair their ability to drive a commercial motor vehicle.

The average DOT physical exam takes roughly 30-40 minutes at our office. Once the driver has been certified, the results of the exam need to be submitted federally and at the state level.
